Blue Dolphin fry

Bad news. :( I lost all the fry. It was a long shot anyway. I didn't have the proper amount of time to cycle the tank. There was an ammonia spike while I was at work yesterday and it took out 3/4 of the fry. The rest of them didn't survive the stress of the water changes. :(

I have time to cycle this 10 gallon tank for next time. I thank you guys for all of your advice and replies. You guys are awesome!

Well good news! I got mama out of the tank before she had a chance to eat any of them. There has to be at least 40 of them in there!
I will go out and find some baby brine shrimp tomorrow after work.

My aqua clear 30 wasn't pushing enough water to properly oxygenate the water so i put in an air stone. I ordered a sponge filter off of ebay for under 6 bucks. That should get here next week or so.

I am totally going to check out this coming swap meet! Unfortunately I have no room for more fish :( haha I'm sure I can find something to waste my money on! lol

How long does the spitting process usually take? I left for a few hours and she still has some in her mouth that haven't been spit yet. Should i remove her when I no longer see movement in her mouth?

Congrats on the brood fryz0r! If you cant find any food that is "made" for fry....just smash up the food your using for your adults. I recently have just been using crushed up flake for some tropheops sp. "olive tiger" fry for the past 2 months and they are fine.

When I initially extracted the Tropheops fry from the mother I just put the fry into a 10 gallon tank with a sponge filter and everything has been great. I have not had any fatalities and they are growing quite rapidly because of the frequent water changes. I hope everything goes well with your first brood! You should totally come to the next GCCA swap. You could stock up on everything youll need for the next time this happens!

As far as feeding goes, you can do baby brine shrimp, but I'm guessing you don't have any ready. There's a food called first bites that you should be able to find at a big box store.

It's really too late for the sponge filter, but i would cover the intake with a piece of sponge to make sure none of the fry end up in the filter. Try Ken's Fish on line for some good deals on sponges for the next time.

Also as far as filtration goes all I have running is an aqua clear 30. Should I add an air stone? Or get my hands on a sponge filter?

Where can I even find a sponge filter? I've never noticed them at the big box stores...and in the waukegan area there really aren't any good LFS. Everything seems to be geared towards salt water around here.

She spit her fry about 20 minutes ago. I'm so glad she did it on my day off!!! I got to see it! This is very cool!

As for feeding them, any suggestions?

I'll post some pictures at some point. They're so small it's hard to even find them in a picture.

You might want to age some water for water changes for the fry. It helps reduce the Ph swings you can get with tap water. I age my water for at least 24 hours and then use that to replace what I have taken out.
